Before 11 September 2001, pilots may allow children to visit the cockpit. Many children are always curious about how an aircraft flies and the look of a cockpit. The current regulations only permit cockpit access to crew members.
Nevertheless in Singapore, we are able to bring our kids to flight simulators such as Flight Experience at Singapore flyer. The static flight simulator operated by Flight Experience is a fully functional Boeing 737-800 simulator.
All pilots must undergo simulation time during their course of training and career. With flight simulator operators opening up the simulator for public access, it also opens up avenues for general public to see and understand how pilots work and train.
Introduction to the cockpit.
When one drives a car, the car moves in a 4 directional movement, but during flying we are moving in 6 directions at once. So how do we know if the plane is level, rolling, climbing or descending?
The instrument on the LEFT, will give you an indication of the speed, the altitude, the roll angle, climb and descend angle. This is known as the Primary Flying Display (FDP). It also displays other important information which is important to safe flight.
The display on the RIGHT will provide the direction, airport and other en-route detail. This is known as the Navigation Display (ND). The ND can be setup to display different information to each pilot.
Between the pilots, the on board flight computer that contains data such as airports and waypoints, together with the throttle control and radios are found here. The throttle control the power output by the engine. This is known as the Center Pedestal.
Each flight is crewed by a Captain and a Co-pilot. Depending on the distance and duration of the flight, the airline will increase the number of pilots operating the flight to ensure that each pilot is able to get some rest. The Captain is in charge of the flight and the aircraft. He is responsible for the safety and safe operation of the flight. The Co-pilot is usually less experienced than the Captain and he assists the Captain in sharing the amount of work in the cockpit. Contrary to popular believe, the co-pilot is also fully qualified to operate the aircraft. Should either pilots be incapacitated, the other pilot can take over the duties and safely land the aircraft.
So how fast an aircraft need to achieve before takeoff?
This depends largely to the Maximum Take-Off weight (MTOW), the runway conditions, weather conditions and flap setting. This means that the Vr also known as take-off speed varies. During our simulator session, we set the flap to 5, the runway was dry and a perfect weather, our Vr is 135knots (250km/h).
How does it feel like flying a Boeing 737-800?
It’s simple, though not really. If your aim is to sit in the pilot seat, push the throttle until Vr and pull back the yoke, it’s simple. It’s not really the case in regular flying. The pilots need to check the plane, the setting, input data and cross check though multiple checklists even before the aircraft is on the runway.

Families bringing their children could expect to create memorable and special memories with the children. Maybe you could discuss with the instructor to allow both of you to fly the aircraft. This may help with parenting bonding, but before this, maybe the parent should fly once with the instructor to experience flying before taking your child on the left seat. After all, how many could say that they flew an aircraft with their children?
